Deep water patricia6/28/2023 ![]() ![]() Yet within weeks Melinda has become very close with pianist Charley, new to town, someone who doesn’t seem to scare of so easily and within days Vic’s fiction becomes much more of a reality. In a rash moment of annoyance, the otherwise well liked and thought of Vic manages to whisper in Ralph’s ear ‘If I really don’t like somebody, I kill him …You remember Malcolm McRae, don’t you?’ It transpires Ralph does, and Vic’s ruse, which is of course untrue, works as Ralph backs off, even though the whole town soon starts talking about it. We soon learn that this has become a bit of a regular, rather annoying, aspect to the marriage of Vic and Melinda, whilst for a while now Vic has let Melinda have small infatuations they have started to become too public. ![]() Vic Van Allen is observing the merriment rather than joining in with it, specifically watching over his wife Melinda who spends most of the evening dancing, rather indiscreetly, with her latest male admirer Ralph. He didn’t dance simply because his wife liked to dance.” As Deep Water opens we are thrown straight into a very middle class evening of wine dancing and merriment at a house in the suburbs of Little Wesley. ![]() “Vic didn’t dance, but not for the reasons that most men who don’t dance give to themselves. The passion jeanette winterson analysis6/28/2023 ![]() ![]() I did find the historical context really interesting and have since been off finding out more. ![]() We also, through her past, get to see how society is at the time, from the reign of Elizabeth I, who we discover is in part responsible for Alice’s wealth, to the reign of James I, a man who brought fear to a nation through fears of his own. Through Alice we see the events as they unfold with the Device family as they live on her land we also see what happens when she becomes accused and what life is like in the dungeons of Lancaster Castle, which Winterson brings almost too vividly to life. It is Alice that Winterson focuses on for her fictional telling of the events. One of these people was Alice Nutter, a loose thread in the whole trial as unlike the other twelve she was a woman on means and money. It is from this point that several things including the effects of Alizon’s curse, rumours the Device family were all witches and a supposed meeting of witches in the Malkin Tower on Good Friday that lead to a trail of thirteen people, the biggest England had seen to date. ![]() He denied her where upon she placed a curse on him. As pedlar John Law met Alizon Device on one of the many tracks around Pendle Hill, on the 21 st of March 1612, and she asked him for some pins. ‘The Daylight Gate’ opens with the events that really caused the Pendle Witch Trial. ****, Hammer Books, 2012, hardback, fiction, 194 pages, kindly sent by the publisher ![]()

![]() Our hero is Lucien Chardon, pertly played by Benjamin Voisin (one of the lovers in François Ozon’s recent drama Summer of 85). An earlier generation might have shrugged at this as cinéma du papa, and modern audiences might smirk at the kind of decorative movie that features archly in the opening credits of Netflix’s French TV comedy Call My Agent! But it’s acted with such terrific panache that not enjoying it is impossible. ![]() X avier Giannoli brings his natural force and flair to this rake’s-progress spectacular, a blue-chip French costume drama adapted from Honoré de Balzac’s 1837 novel about a poetic youth who comes to the big city with provincial idealism and callow sensitivity, only to replace them with ambition, lust, corruption and (worst of all) journalism. ![]()

Fire island pride and prejudice6/28/2023 ![]() ![]() “Fire Island” is inspired by Jane Austen’s novel “Pride and Prejudice,” which tells the story of two individuals who must put aside their pride and preconceived notions of each other in order to see the other’s virtues. ![]() They reunite their “makeshift little family” that consists of longtime pals they met while working at a “cursed brunch spot” a decade earlier and converge on a vacation home hosted by another friend played by Margaret Cho. The two play best friends who take a summer trip to Fire Island - known as one of America’s first gay beach towns, located off the south shore of Long Island, N.Y. Booster also stars alongside “Saturday Night Live” actor Bowen Yang. Stand-up comedian and “Big Mouth” star Joel Kim Booster wrote and executive produced the film, whose first trailer was released Monday. “Pride and Prejudice” is being remade again - this time as the queer rom-com “Fire Island,” a feature-length film from Searchlight Pictures. ![]()

![]() ![]() Often, she is the most predictable, sane character in any given story. People Magazine Short and peppy chapters for reading or read-alouds. She is just an animal and she acts like one. This fast-paced tale features a pig named Mercy, a problem neighbor, and piles of buttered toast. But, the best thing about Mercy is that she is a pig. She can be cajoled into a pink princess dress with the promise of buttered toast, expertly buttered by Mrs Watson. ![]() Mercy is a bit like a huge, buttered toast loving dog. The Mercy Watson to the Rescue picture book by Kate DiCamillo follows Mercy Watson, a pig who loves hot buttered toast, and her efforts to stay out of. Then, there are the firemen, Ned and Lorenzo and Officer Tomilello, who are called upon to make a rescue, catch a thief or some other daring act in each book. Their neighbors, the elderly sisters Lincoln sisters, Eugenia and Baby, love and loathe Mercy. Mr and Mrs Watson dote on their pig and treat her like a cross between a child and a dog. ![]() The Southern charm in these books is thick as molasses, spread out amongst the characters and their odd, but somehow sensible habits. But, it is DiCamillo's quirky characters, the least of whom is Mercy, will keep you reading. Of course the gorgeous, detail rich illustrations by Chris Van Dusen, illustrator and author of Circus Ship, one of my favorite picture books last year and one that topped my list of Best Picture Books of 2009, draw you in to the Mercy Watson Series right away. ![]()

Only a Kiss by Mary Balogh6/27/2023 ![]() ![]() However, it is explained why in The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh. ![]() In addition, Rabbit lives in a tree, as opposed to living in a burrow in other versions. For example, Tigger likes - or at least is shown to eat - honey (compared with most other versions of the Winnie the Pooh stories where "Tiggers don't like honey!") and can climb up - but more importantly climb down from trees. The show can be viewed as non-canonical in other ways. This is where the book with Pooh and his friends in it opens and the theme song begins. Neither Christopher nor his mother speak with an English accent.Įach show begins entering Christopher Robin's bedroom and hearing his mother say, "Christopher, time for school." Christopher Robin answers, "OK, Mom!", puts down a book and leaves. The series departs from many of the established facts of Milne's books for example, Tigger resides in the Hundred Acre Wood from the start, and Kanga and Roo are later introduced as newcomers. ![]() The series appears to take place sometime after the events of Milne's original stories since his son Christopher Robin Milne is clearly a fifth grader and 11 years old. ![]()
