Supergods6/26/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() Comic books are where I’ve always had most fun and freedom as a writer, so it seems only fair to give something back. With respect to the best of the superhero movies, comic books are still where to go if you you’re looking for challenging and sophisticated superhero stories, that still come out on a regular basis. Comic books since 1938 have tested the superhero idea to destruction and back through reconstruction to a triumphant renaissance of popularity in the early 21st century when superheroes began to migrate en masse from their pages to the new mass media environments like cinema and computer gaming. When the new and improved strain of superheroes appeared, they spread like kudzu choking out all other genres. ![]() ![]() Superhero stories are no longer confined to comic books, but comic books provided fertile soil in which the concept could take root and flourish in a thousand different directions. Here, from the original draft when the ‘Tree of Life’ structure of Supergods was more in evidence, we plant our feet in the physical sphere of Malkuth and dig into the nuts and bolts of constructing a superhero universe. Stringent cuts were requested by my editor and made for final publication.Īs a result, there are entire chapters and sections of the book that have never been seen. My history of superhero stories Supergods was published in 2011 but the original manuscript was double the requested length. ![]()

Both Clarke's novel and her short stories are set in a magical England and written in a pastiche of the styles of 19th-century writers such as Jane Austen and Charles Dickens. Clytemnestra costanza casati6/24/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() The events of Clytemnestra's life are not much rearranged here. She will be called ruthless, merciless, "cruel queen and unfaithful wife," but viewed from another angle, Clytemnestra fights honorably for her own well-being and for that of the people she loves. Clytemnestra is a masterpiece of justified rage on the protagonist's part, and a subtly subversive revision of a story many readers know from a different perspective. ![]() Aeschylus, Homer and Euripides generally portray Clytemnestra in a negative light, but Casati's reframing-from her title character's point of view-emphasizes the difficult circumstances that challenged a strong-willed woman in a time and place that did not reward such a quality. Costanza Casati's debut, Clytemnestra, is a dynamic retelling of the story of the much-maligned Spartan princess, sister of Helen, queen of Mycenae, mother of Iphigenia, Electra and Orestes (and others). "Kings are brilliant / mighty / godlike // Queens are deadly / shameless / accursed." Such has been the literary fate of Clytemnestra-adulteress, wife and murderer of Agamemnon in the Ancient Greek canon. ![]()
